A procedure that has been used successfully for years to heal sports injuries in athletes is now becoming the treatment of choice by both men and women to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars, sun damage and even dark circles under their eyes. This treatment known as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), is gaining popularity in Melbourne, Florida for the same reasons athletes have used it for years. It is organic in nature and has profound effects. It uses plasma taken from the patient’s own blood instead of using harsh chemicals injected into the body. The possibility of side effects is practically nonexistent because the body is unlikely to reject its own blood.
This treatment has become popular thanks to celebrities who tried and recommended this innovative procedure, and is now commonly known as the “PRP Facial”.
The plasma in the PRP stimulates the patient’s stem cells naturally and “wakes them up” causing them to produce more collagen, which is what makes the skin more youthful. The plasma in blood contains molecules and nourishing proteins that provide nutrients to the skin’s cells, so it’s the healthiest, most natural way to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars and other harmful effects of aging.
The procedure is performed in the office by a licensed practitioner who draws your blood. The blood is then centrifuged and the PRP is separated from the remainder of the cells. This is then applied to your face after radiofrequency microneedling, such as Fractora, or even a surgical procedure. Because PRP is applied to the skin after these types of procedures it leaves no scar.
You may experience slight discomfort from the blood draw or bruise from the injection. However, the procedure itself is extremely safe.
Most people are good candidates for treatment, depending on the patient’s individual concerns. Many seek this treatment to rejuvenate their skin and restore a healthy glow to volume deficient areas of the face such as under the eyes and corners of the mouth.
The new cell growth in your skin generated by the PRP takes weeks to months. Both men and women who have had PRP treatments find their faces look better several months after they have had the treatments. That is because the plasma stimulates their skin’s stem cells to produce more collagen, grow new cells, and literally rejuvenate their skin. Botox and other dermal filler treatments break down over time, but PRP looks better and can last 18 months and up to two years.
PRP is typically combined with a microneedling treatment like Fractora, or surgical procedure such as a facelift and is an additional cost. Costs can range from $200 to $500 depending on the size of the area treated. Compared to other less natural aesthetic procedures, it is relatively at the same price point. As an elective procedure, PRP is not covered by medical insurance.
